The Story...
The True Origins of Santa Claus
Of course, it's common knowledge that many of the symbols and icons associated with Christmas have their roots in the shamanistic traditions of the tribal peoples of pre-Christian Northern Europe.
These ancient communities, such as the Koyak tribes of the Russian steppe, held the notion of a World Tree, stretching from the underworld into the heavenly kingdoms, with the Pole Star at its topmost summit. And through its branches, the spirit of the shaman ascended. In the physical realm, the point of exit to this unseen world was represented by the smokehole at the top of the yurt.
In his book When Santa was a Shaman, Tony van Renterghem describes how a shaman of the Herne/Pan god led Winter Solstice rituals, initiated the new year, rewarded the good, punished the bad, officiated at sacrifices and headed fertility rites.
The shaman dressed in a red cloak, representing spiritual fire - a potent symbol in these cold lands. He wore bells to frighten away any unfriendly spirits, and was drawn across the heavens by a team of reindeer.
In this song we wanted to celebrate these magical creatures, who bring us the gift of their swift beauty and grace each Christmastime.

Artist Profile: Magicfolk produce a traditional and modern blend of folk, celtic, prog-rock and psychfolk, writing original and alluring songs with mythological and mystic leanings.
The 6-piece line-up uses assorted flutes and pipes, fiddle, guitars, keyboards, bass and drums, and rich vocal harmonies. There’s also a story-telling element to their songs, crafted with the colours and inspirations from story and folklore.
Dynamic and inventive, their material ranges from soft ambient ballads and folk sounds to driving rock rhythms.
Magicfolk also love their roots music and will often burst into fiddle-fuelled foot-stomping jigs and reels.
Early influences include Jethro Tull, Steeleye Span, Fairport Convention, Jefferson Airplane, Clannad, Bowie, Yes, Dead Can Dance, and Pink Floyd.
They continue to absorb new influences, including traditional sounds along the lines of Capercaillie, prog-rock timings in the style of Dream Theater, and world music influences such as Greek or South American drum rhythms.
