Wren King
(words & music by Coleman/Hines)

Here comes our Wren King
Sacred and magical
On the last day of each year
He sings for us -
a King in harmony

... beloved wren
... songster of the wintertime
... our beloved wren
... the best in all the land

Sacred, divine
Renew the year for us
Spirit released
Promise new life

Here comes our Wren King
Sacred and magical
On the first day of a new year
He sings for us -
a King in harmony

... beloved wren
... harbinger of life
... our beloved wren
... the promise of the land

Sacred, divine
Renew the year for us
Bless the land
Promise new life ...

The Story...

Wren King is a new song bringing together the mythic strands of the Winter King and of the wren as King of the Birds. The wren was known as the king of the birds throughout Europe and beyond. The tales goes that in a contest to find out who should be proclaimed King of the Birds, the Eagle claimed the title as he could fly highest, but just when he’d reached the peak of his flight, the canny little wren, who’d been ‘stowing away’, hitching a lift unnoticed on the eagle’s back, took to his wings and so flew higher still - and claimed the crown.

The song explores the concept of sacrifice and the Winter King. Wrens have an association with winter customs practised in Britain and Ireland until quite recently, some of which originally involved the hunting of a wren and its procession around the neighbourhood by the ‘Wren boys’ who would beg for money from the local farms. In later times it would be a symbolic wren not a real one.

Naturally these days we’re horrified at the idea of real sacrifice – but what about when it actually meant something to the communities which practised it? Sacrifice is not about killing, it’s about giving up willingly something you value to make a deal with unseen forces. The more you value the thing you’re sacrificing, the more you expect in return.

So the song is in praise of the ‘beloved wren’ who sings magnificently throughout the winter and who symbolises the life and health of the land.
