Wiccan Dance
(by Ben & Michelle Glover)

Audience Count: 24,199

The Story...
With "Wiccan Dance" we wanted to try writing a track in the style of a traditional folk tune. It started with the flute melody, and we gradually added other instruments to the mix; violin, accordion and rhythm guitar. When it came to the instrumental things went off at a bit of a tangent. Guest saxophonist Mike Greenland started with a jazzy riff, and Colin Mold (now with Karnataka) added a guitar solo that took things in a kind of psychedelic rock direction. The trumpet sounds were created with an Akai EWI (Electronic Wind Instrument) , a kind of electronic flute, played through a VL70 synth module. And we finished it off with the "Wiccan Dance" chorus.
Dance has always had a close association with magic and mystery, whether it be the Bacchic dances of the nymphs, or the ecstatic twirling of the dervishes; the Witches Sabbat or the sacred dances of Gurdjieff. Lord Shiva in his dancing form is called Nataraj, 'King of the Dancers'. His dance is the "Dance of Bliss", and is said to symbolise the cosmic cycles of creation and destruction; the rhythm of birth and death. But our dance is just a simple celebration, a dance of joy.
