Samhain Night
(words & music by Imbolc Fire)More than shadows here tonight Flicker in the firelight More than echoes in the wind More than breezes touch our skin
Pass the horn and sing the praise Of those who walked in older days Stand before the fire bright Hail the Dead this Samhain night
Hail the Ancestors with me Hail the Friends and Family Hail the Spirits, Hail the Souls Hail the night that makes us whole
Draw them here across the Veil Sing their praise and tell their tale See the faces in the flames Hear the voices, call the names
Pour libations to the ground Fill the night with joyous sound Stand before the fire bright Hail the Dead this Samhain night
Hail the Ancestors with me Hail the Friends and Family Hail the Spirits, Hail the Souls Hail the night that makes us whole
They live in more than memory The Veil so thin that we can see The friends and loves that we long for Are waiting on the other shore
Remember why we gather here At the closing of the year Stand before the fire bright Hail the Dead this Samhain night

The Story...
The lyrics for Samhain Night were written the morning after a beautiful Samhain ritual with a private group. The echoes of "Hail to the Ancestors! Hail to the Dead!" rang in my mind; the lingering touch of connection to those beyond the Veil remained long after the circle was closed. I wrote the lyrics in a single pass, trying to find a way to share the beauty and mystery of the ritual. The culture of the United States tends to shunt death to the side - we refuse to acknowledge it, we cover it over with pretense and pithy sayings that ultimately do not touch the well of grief, love and connection that mingle when someone crosses over. At their most profound and powerful, Samhain rituals redress that balance. They give us a space to honor not only our recent dead but the long line of life, beauty and vitality that is our ancestral heritage.
The lyrics languished in a file for some time before they were given a musical form. The members of Imbolc Fire, a studio project, are also in Cassandra Syndrome, a touring operatic metal band. Amusingly, the words were put to music while Cassandra Syndrome was waiting to be interviewed on a local radio station. We were sitting in the radio station parking lot, and we happened to have a guitar, the lyrics, and some free time. The rest, as they say, is history. I hope you enjoy the song.
