Oh Love
(words & music by Roger Helfrick)Oh love, take my hand, walk me through a mountain glen, where no voice disturbs our peace but the lark in distant trees.
Oh love, take my heart, keep it tucked away from harm, far from carrion birds that prey upon its song from day to day.
Oh love take my voice, release it to the worlds embrace. Let it laugh beneath the sun to return bright as night draws on.
With my voice, heart, and hand I'll walk you through a mountain glen. We'll laugh and sing of morning's light and melt our woes in larksong bright, Oh love.

The Story...
This is a love song that I wrote for my partner, when we had been together for only two years. It was the Winter of 1996 and I was living in Calgary. I had been going through a protracted funk and was generally incapable of dragging myself free of it. I was still relatively new at the harp (I had only played for three years at that point) but I found myself sitting at the harp and just improvising, letting the vibrations and sounds wash over and through me. A simple bass line/arpeggiated chord progression emerged and I sank into it, letting it grow and develop. Some lyrics came forth and I wrote the first three verses in approximately fifteen minutes. My malaise had pretty much vanished at that point as the "awen" had washed it away. It took another two weeks to get the fourth verse to manifest in a way that tied it all back together and to expand the harp arrangement. This has been a blessed song, performed at numerous weddings, handfastings, anniversaries and in various friends homes over the past decade, and yet it still brings a tear to my husband's eye. Just for knowledge, 2014 will be our 20th anniversary.
Recorded: 1997, Calgary, Canada

His repertoire includes traditional and early music from northern and central Europe but centers around his own compositions and improvisations. The turning seasons and the lessons of nature are the primary muses that lead his musical wanderings.
