Beltane Fire
(words & music by Edelberg/Tracy)

Beltane Fire ©2006 S. Edelberg/L. Tracy

Beltane fire, here our desire
I follow where you lead
Here mine to choose, I won't refuse
The summons and the need

Beltane fire, Beltane fire

Pan, Shiva - here Cernunnos!
Lure me to the dance
Here rhythm rolls, and now I hold
Her power in my hands

Beltane fire, Beltane fire
Beltane fire, Beltane fire

Will you take me to the sacred grove
Will you wear His face for me
Will you flinch if I unleash
Her magic and her beauty

Sacred Rite, O holy night
Give the Earth Her due
Here you are He and I am She
And what was old is new

Beltane fire, Beltane fire
Beltane fire, Beltane fire

The Story...

I am posting this for all of my friends here on the Vox this blessed Beltane. Enjoy! And most certainly enjoy Beltane as well!!!

Looking back, this was the single best creative collaboration in my career. Sho is an amazing lyricist and musician. She was a classmate of folks like Branford Marsalis and King's X at the Berklee School of Music.

We met at the local Unitarian Universalist church - and I was immediately struck by her obviously Pagan jewelry and tats. After I struck up a conversation with her and her husband, we found that we were both serious musicians.

When we first got together at their apartment, I was floored. It was immediate magic (and magick) . Over the next few months, we collaborated on a number of songs with magicakal intent. We could both jam at warp speed, able to virtually read each other's mind and improvise on the fly. I wish we'd recorded some of our spontaneous improvisations. The music flowed like a selection of different fine wines - sometimes dark and rich, sometimes effervescent like champagne.

I think we brought out the best in each other as players, as we had different musical and spiritual backgrounds - she more free and wild, me more grounded. I can't speak for her, but she encouraged me in taking risks and gave me wings. It was a deeply spiritual experience for me.

As with all good things, it all ended much too soon. We were both under a terrific amount of pressure in our personal lives. For me it was working days, going back to to grad school at night, a relationship dying spectacularly, and at the end caring for my mother during her final illness. She had way too much going on at the same time, so we wound up taking it out on each other and ended our working relationship on bad terms.

But I'll say it again - this was the best musical collaborative partnership in my now 40 years of working in music. I've heard songs of mine on both college and commercial national radio that made the bottom of the charts back in the 80's (but no major hits) and worked with major label artists as well in supporting roles as an engineer, but I feel our work together was better if not as commercial. Please enjoy one of the fruits in this blessed season!

Recorded: Shoshanna's Dining Room, November 2006
Guests/Players: Shoshanna Edelberg: Lead and harmony female vocals, flute, lyrics.
Larry Tracy: Remainder.

Technical Notes: Shoshanna: Solid Sterling silver flute (I can't remember the make, but it was a tres expensive custom jobbie) . Blue Woodpecker microphone.

Larry: Fender Stratocaster electric guitar, Carvin BB-75 5-string fretless bass. Recording doo-lollies.

Drum loops from Mick Fleetwood's "Total Drumming" drum and percussion loop CD. Used under the terms of use given with the purchase of the loop library.

Recorded with Cakewalk Sonar Producer through a PreSonus interface and KRK monitors. Recording process somehow managed with the equipment on the dining room table and the live acoustic performances recorded in the kitchen with natural reverb .

Artist Profile: Asherah was a short-lived duo formed and ended in Atlanta, Georgia during late 2006. It was named for the ancient Semitic mother goddess and consort to Yahweh, whose clay figurines are found in the remains of excavated pre-Exilic households all over ancient Israel - to the consternation of Biblical archaeologists.
