Daniel C. Mehling  by David Mehling My son, Daniel passed into the Summerland on the evening of Saturday June 25th. He was at a nephew's graduation party swimming in the Sandusky River several miles north of Fremont, Ohio along with several cousins and his younger sister. About 7:10 PM, he suddenly went under for undetermined reasons. A rescue effort was mounted including several adult relatives jumping into the river, two fire departments, two helicopters, and the sheriffs dive team. About an hour later, his body was found 20 feet from shore, under 12 feet of water in a hole on the river bottom. My wife Tina and I were at home at the time, but rushed to the scene. We were able to see and touch his body within minutes of his removal from the river. He was going to be a junior in high school and had turned 17 twelve days before. He loved to write poetry and songs, draw cartoons, and create elaborate homes in the game The Sims. He enjoyed reading and spending time in nature. He told me several times that the outdoors was his church. He was very interested in flowers and landscaping and had been accepted into the horticulture program at the local vocational school. Several of his poems show a deep spiritual nature. Visitation was on Tuesday June 28 with a non-demoninational funeral service and burial on June 29th.
