Imhotep/Sasquatch 1961-2004
On the thirteenth day of the month of Mars, a King departed the Earth on hawk's wings; Richard (as in "the Lion-Hearted") Roberts, better known as "Sasquatch" to us here in Toronto, and as "Imhotep"to those where he lived, in Nelson, BC, has died.
Many of the elders in Toronto will remember him from the very early-to-mid-80s; he was a veritable fixture on the pagan scene in Toronto, which centred mostly about the Wiccan Church of Canada. He was a great amiable bear of a man, with long blonde hair and beard, wearing a patchwork leather robe, and who dispensed hugs liberally. Sasquatch/Imhotep was showing signs of being an original character even then, but unlike most people he never stopped being who he was. He never sold out to the system. He was, unlike most of us, content with little, therefore he always gave the appearance of being poor. He had, however, one of the richest, fullest existences of anyone I ever knew. He was a child of God, and the world was his playground; he never missed an opportunity to explore, rearrange, or decorate the world around him. Every object he encountered, from cow sacrums to toilet plungers, were privileged to be turned into works of art under his hands. I purchased a piece of his art from him, a breast-shaped vessel with a crystal nipple. He sent it to me secretly spiked with contraband herb... I never dreamed it would someday serve as his funerary urn.
The day of his death, a Peregrine falcon, symbol of the Egyptian Sun God, appeared in the back yard. I know now for sure that he is there on the Other Side, having a wonderful time extending himself into all dimensions, flying around, and hugging all his friends at once!. After that visit from the hawk, I could only think, "He's going to love being dead!" He is not going to miss his body. But those of us who knew and loved him will miss his body terribly. I hope all those who were privileged to receive a piece of his art will take the time to hold it tightly at least once and think of him hugging them as he almost surely did at one time. . Then, you too can be sure he will be there for you when you cross the Great River. Look for him in your dreams. I know I will. Farewell, loyal husband, brother, and playfellow. For now, that is.
"I am the Justified One, Osiris Onnophris, Lord of Life, triumphant over death. I am He who liveth and was dead, but behold, I am alive forevermore, and hold the keys of hell and death. I am the Purified. There is no part of me which is not of the Gods. I have fought upon Earth for good. I have finished my work. I have entered into the Invisible."
