An "Open Letter" To Pagans
(please forward to your pagan connections nationwide):

Since Tuesday's attack on the United States, every newspaper, television channel and radio station has been filled with interviews. Business leaders, politicians, "experts" in every conceivable field, journalists, family members, and religious leaders have spoken for hours and hours on every conceivable aspect of the attack.......except for one. Pagans.

Undoubtably, some of the dead and missing are pagans. If we accept a ratio of 1 pagan per 200 citizens (a conservative, but reasonable figure), there would be at least 25 dead pagans. That's 25 DEAD PAGANS. Pagan family members and friends of the dead could possibly number into the thousands. These Americans and pagans are among the "forgotten" casualties- no one is speaking for them.

None of the neo-pagan movement's self-declared "leaders" have surfaced to tell the world of the pagan dead; to join with the religious community to openly mourn the loss of life, or to offer public healing for pagan family members of the dead. There were no pagans at the National Cathedral Friday to take part in the national remembrance and memorial service, although leaders of the other religions were in attendance...Muslim sitting by Jew, Protestant sitting by Catholic.

Where are Wren and Fritz? Where is Margot Adler? Where is Laurie Cabot? Where is Raymond Buckland? Where is Z Budapest? Where is Starhawk? Where is Silver Ravenwolf? Where are Gavin and Yvonne Frost? Where is Isaac Bonewits? They seem to be MIA... were they all having breakfast at the top of the World Trade Center on Tuesday morning? Or is there another reason for their strange silence?

For a bunch of so-called "sensitive" people, we have not heard of ONE pagan leader who is actually communicating with the spirits of the lost, finding those who are missing or helping them to move on.

For a bunch of self-styled "psychics" and "seers", we didn't hear of ONE vision, ONE horoscope, ONE tarot reading, or ONE channeled message warning of the terrible death and destruction that rained upon New York and Washington, and is sending us headlong into war.

Maybe Llewellyn Books needs to schedule a book signing somewhere, so these "leaders" can poke their heads out of their burrows.

Unless we have active engagement in the rebuilding and healing process by the neo-pagan "leaders", we will be further marginalized- by our own doing. Part of the reason pagans live in the shadows is that we like being misfits. This is not the time for mis-fitting, however.

If we don't see active involvement and true "leadership", we can be sure that the people who have appointed themselves "leaders" and "elders" are nothing more than hucksters; con artists, preying on people with the need to believe in something. No better than John Edwards or Miss Cleo.

One more question needs to be asked: where are the pagan leaders of YOUR community?

DC Hannah
