Ghost Ship

Sometime
When the fog rolls in from the ocean
And your cheek feels the chill of the fog-wraith’s kiss
And the voice of the foghorn, so near in the distance
Cries out all around you in anguish and pain,
A ship, running silent, glides up to the pier-side
And lowers her gangplank to pipe you aboard.
Then she raises her gangplank and casts off her bow line
And carries you back, once again, to the sea
And only your footprints, winking out on the jetty
Show that you ever, ever, were here
