Fallen

by Eve Spiritsinger
 Age Group: Adult

~ Fallen ~
Shaking hands reach out asking for some Samaritan's aid, ... But all they find is the numbing cold... Forgotten heroes searching for someone to hold. Someone to remember them from their glory days. Someone to lift them...from the street's decay, And someone who cares for those gone astray, ..... Who cares for those who have fallen?
Dark faded eyes glance up at the passersby, But their footsteps never slow, Nor do they ever really want to know how it could have come to this. For life to cease and then desist. Left alone, who could rise above and resist... Becoming one of those, who have fallen.
Appearances deceive our careless, calous minds. Whether in tattered rags or silken gowns, ... Undressed, we are the same inside. Judging our lives with foolish pride. We must remember that those we've denied could someday be the Angels we pray would guide us, Should we, .... become fallen.
~ Eve
Author's Notes: I wrote this poem one day during the Holiday season, when the local "Salvation Army" was advertising for both volunteers to serve Christmas dinner to the homeless people who frequent the soup kitchen in downtown Vancouver and for donations to pay for Christmas dinner. I remember thinking to myself what about the other 364 days? Who is volunteering to help with that, who is giving donations for them then?! They were holding the dinner at the start of December so that it wouldn't interfere with the Christmas schedules of the volunteers. I remember the outrage I felt that day, that the people on the street were an inconvience at a busy time. And that they would still be cold and alone on Christmas Morning. And I wondered what those same volunteers and charitible donors would do if they suddenly found themselves in the shoes of those whom they were volunteering to serve.
