The Solitary Rows we Hoe

If I told you that I wear no watch
I don’t suppose that would surprise you
If I said my ancestry was Irish and Scotch
‘No reason there to think you’re being lied to.
But if I told you how I make my living
I don’t suppose that you’d believe
That through calculated culling
its woodland life that we’re giving
You might think it a yarn I weave.
If I told you about the life that I lead
you might think it impossibly romantic
... the magic peace.. the greenery... my faithful steed
You’d think me too Old World... 'probably fanatic.
And if I told you ‘bout the houses I inhabit:
‘of whispering wood and stone age-old
where the winter larder’s full of deer and rabbit
you’d think its such a tale I’ve told.
But I could tell you ‘bout my ancestors’stand
though they’ve been 150 years dead
If I said I know them through this land
You might think I’m outta my head.
But it really is the sun and moon that regulates our time
and, yes, here we all broker wild death for life
here, Nature whispers to us in familiar rhythm & rhyme.
And, yes, here one happy home, a lovely wife,
...and one empty enchanting witches’ cottage.
So why is it that I tell you this?
‘not sure I even know...
It’s not to boast about any life of bliss
No, i just want to let you know
that though there’s beauty found here
(life & death’s dance in relative abundance)
I confess: I miss the sorceress’ kiss
and the soil here is barren
Among the solitary rows we hoe.
