The Public's Library

by Cernunnos Poetry
 Age Group: Adult

Yes, Mrs Librarian, I did sign an internet user writ... What’s that you say? Yeah, I know, no porn or hate-lit...
Yes, Mrs. Librarian I understand I’ve just one hour but its only been 50 minutes... okay, okay, I’m leaving... You’re the one here wielding minor power.
So tell me, Mrs. Librarian, for whom and what exactly do you work? You don’t like my choice of web-friends? Too bad! Yaknow you are the public’s clerk...
No, Mrs. Librarian, Paganism is not evil superstition... Huh? ‘not comfortable with my Old Religion? So sad...but you do know about the Constitution?
So tell me, Mrs. Librarian, What do you stand for in this public service? Surely ‘not in way of thoughtful poets at play sharing ideas, and knowledge, and passion? (We don’t care if that makes you nervous) .
Dear Mrs. Librarian, Please, lets respect each other here, where the right to knowledge is revered. We’re both on the side of thought that is free. (Besides... you won’t want to lock horns with me) .
Author's Notes: Public libraries stand as one of the most progressive, democratic and humane resources within our rural communities. They stand in the longest and proudest tradition of empowering common folk through public access to knowledge - true sacred places where they can be challenged by new ideas, find literature that is, for so many, a gateway to wider worlds’ beyond - both inner and outer. Any librarian privileged to be a guardian of this tradition must surely understand that libraries, of all places, must remain bastions of free thought, free speech, and public access to information in the service of diversifying, and enhancing small town 'community values' (in the spirit of philosopher John Stuart Mill who understood that you should welcome ideas that challenge you because through them you will either strengthen your own world view, or ditch it for something that resonates within you as closer to the Truth) . Kindness always, C.
