Horns in Harness

by Cernunnos Poetry
 Age Group: Adult

) O (
Harnessing the Wild Wind (Horns in Harness) November 16, 2006
-
You might think me far too wild to ever submit to collar and hame Yet your soft eyes render me so mild Your gentle way makes me almost tame
You might think I far too strong to submit to your leather harness Yet I can not tell right from wrong In your shadow's looming darkness
You might think it far too dangerous to let me draw your fine wooden cart Yet all of LIfe around seems treacherous To those who face it not with open Heart
You'd think I would protest and buck When you control me with your reins I will return you safe in best of luck After we course reckless through my veins
You might think I can't be reached That I am too distant, too wild-borne Yet in a snowy night I can be teached To be gently driven on by moonlit horn
Author's Notes: This was inspired by an historic picture that was sent to me yesterday, by a very dear friend, of a pair of wild moose, pulling a cart, in harness ca. 1920's. I know of other moose that had been captured, tamed, saddled and ridden and driven (sleighs and wagons) last century. Moose can be easily domesticated, so it is a good thing that it is forbidden by law throughout the northern world (when you think about it, farming a species usually results in the extinction of the wild ancestors of that species..
Moose under saddle scare the hell out of horses (which is ostensibly why Kings of Old, proud horsemen and mounted warriors, had the good sense throughout their lands, to forbid the domestication of moose. Once upon a long time ago a warring northern tribe, with a relatively small number of moose mounted warriors, wreaked havoc amidst the olde world with their moose cavalry. Until they were finally defeated, crushed. Moose never again to be captured and harnessed!!
The law stuck throughout the ages, and is still with us. Is why we still have these awesome creatures in our midst! (beautiful horses safe inside their pastures, wild majestic moose free in the woods beyond) .
