Populus tremuloides

by Cernunnos Poetry
 Age Group: Adult

) O (
Populus tremuloides
July11, 2005
She lives there at the very edge where the forest meets the field Advancing lines there in the sand to which the ploughs of men must yield
She is prepared to take back grey cities when, from roads and sidewalks, traffic lacks She'll reclaim the concrete when her children find their foot-holds, growing in the cracks
But for now She peacefully proliferates She just makes music, dancing in the wind She is ambivant to your troubled world She cares not how much you've sinned
When you are plunged back into wilderness You will want to know Her, and Her pride For even though She will not nourish you She can be a powerful friend and guide
She can help you find some sustenance Food, warmth, and comfort She'll bestoweth But you'll still need to know the difference 'tween sweet Morchella and Angel O'Death
You can eat and dance among the faerie rings that She watches over through a Merlin eyas But if you do, you'll need to know some things: like poison Clitocybe 'tis found 'midst Morasmius
If you survive into the coldest months of winter when its just some warmth that you'll desire She'll return the Respect you finally show Her with enough dry sticks to feed your little fire
When, my friend, you find you also need a spear She will give you wood that's easy carving She will even lead you to kill the very deer that she has kindly fed to keep from starving...
Come spring She'll also feed our brother Bear even though he took one of Her youngest deer She will lend the Goshawk then a nesting house Even though he stole most of her winter Grouse
In dry summer you'll be glad to find Her standing beside a soft wet meadow and a little bit o' water With luck you'll find wild parsnip at this landing ...unless you confuse it with Cicuta maculata...
She is prepared to take back your cities When the road and sidewalk traffic's thinned But for now She's beautifully proliferating 'Just making music, dancing in the wind
Author's Notes: I wrote this poem some time ago... under rather mysterious circumstances. It's meaning is clearer to me now... it is a protection poem. Or maybe its just about a tree: trembling aspen.
Mother Earth I humbly bow to thee... Namaste
