The Bridge (The Gathering of the Faithful)
May 27, 2007
D
There is no telling what finally brought us all together the only thing we have in common among this crowd is the intensity of our commitment our faiths diverse as we are orthodox jew fundamentalist christian devote muslim hindu yogic mennonite ecetera I am just honoured to be here (maybe that in itself means our time has come) was that god speaking through his audio system or did we all just share the same collective thought when we were instructed that we must now embrace that which we have spiritually in common and otherwise respect our differences for our survival depends upon this Truth and we surely know this to be true under a sky churning red and grey so foreboding and the air electric with change we need to get off this island as soon as possible before the calamity of it all begins but of course there are those defiantly defensive among us too righteous to ever cooperate with the likes of us their protests preceding then drowned out obscured by the thunderous awe of yonder bridge beginning to disintegrate a sizable chunk of its main support structure falling away into the black ocean - thats it - who is with me I am leaving this place now and so our pilgrimage starts on foot over the long elevated skyway crumbling and quaking beneath our feet this is no time for doubting that truism driven home punctuated when the bridge collapses behind us leaving the weak of heart to their sad island fate there is no turning back although the highway road ahead is very uncertain and I do not much like heights as it is much less balancing on this violently shaking I-beam as our bridge shudders and groans and more concrete cracks and falls away into the void leaving us more vulnerable and exposed clinging to nothing more than twisted re-bar and air yet we confidently move forward quakers and witches and buddist monks friends reaching confidently out to assist each others' safe passage across the gaps over the mid-span apex I know not where the skeletal remains of this bridging frame leads us nor whether enough of it will hold together long and continuously enough to take us there but those who have ventured bravely thus far fear not death any longer content as we are that we have made it this far peacefully over to the other side of half-way knowing that we are acting with all our open hearts believing together we can get over It...
