Once Great Lakes

The Once Great Lakes
September 20, 2007
Do you remember when it just rained? How we took Her for granted then It wasn't even that long ago That we would pray that it not rain on parades and pageants Oh but now when it does rain finally on parched ground the collectively sigh is palpable From and for all of Nature in relief Now when it rains we could almost think that everything is going to be just fine And so sweet then is the moist air Soothing to dry blackened lungs and for Her scorched earth Life returns in the rain like balsam scent from the trees glowing then so bright with life again the long hard silence of the Sun finally given over to tree frog choruses and peepers and mass migrations of leopard frogs liberated from their squallid refugee ponds blindly facing the treachery of our roads it is worth all risk to taste one more the promise of everlasting love and life in endless swamps where even sweet death comes on naturally and it rains it rained alot then but now is it just me? or does it not rain with the same frequency Do you remember when it once just rained? How we took Her so for granted then it was not even all that long ago The Great Lakes were then still so great I mean... Do you remember how we prayed foolish then for it not to rain then that it not rain on our parades not rain upon our celebrations now we dance solemnly for lightning thundering upon distant horizons for rain rain let it rain
Author's Notes: All five of the Great Lakes are at levels below historic record lows and/or long term averages. More over Lake Superior has warmed 2.5 degrees C in less than three decades... that does not sound like much but its enough to change weather and rainfall patterns throughout the Great Lakes watershed. Its all the more alarming because 99% of the water in the Great Lakes is non-renewable, glacial in origin. Once its gone its gone. The lake volumes are down about 1%. It does not sound like alot but its at the difference between using the Lakes sustainably and using them up! Our governments, on both sides of the border, will study it again for another 3 or 4 years. That will get them through to the next elections without having to acknowledge a potential problem. They won't disappear anytime soon.... the lakes I mean. It rained this past week and it was glorious. Namaste C.
