Our Softened Heart

We need to know when it is over
For on this path no sign says 'stop'
So we must turn like the leaves of fall
Before we burn red then die and drop
We need to learn when its all over
Before our path is hidden under snow
We shed our past to not fall over
When harsh cold winter's gales blow
We need to see where our path ends
By the time of our forked roads' arrival
Then be first to say 'let's just be friends'
So we might greet most the spring's revival
We need to know when to walk on
For we'll not stroll this verdant path again
Nor let darkness block our summer dawn
Which glistens warm like green leaves in rain
Then we need to know when its all over
For our joined paths must split apart
Like dark seeds will fall from autumn clover
Before hard frost takes down our softened heart
