Shadow Painter
(In the Silent Wood)

His hardwood trees have shed their colour
Her evening sky lays burden grey in cloud
Their marsh green pastures dry and duller
Now that She does not leave him so proud
His dark nights have become longer
Her strident midday sun has grown cold
The scent of autumn death is stronger
Now that She waxes on not shining bold
Lean grey wolves have resumed howling
As they are closing in on Her back door
Three hungry black bears are now growling
And without Her he is not brave as before
His old moonlit path o'er grown is fainter
As Her solemn huntress moon now wanes
Black is the brush of night's shadow painter
Now Her ardor flows not through his veins
Another of Her spring fawns has fallen
Its red blood absorded back in Her ground
The hunter's heart now still and sullen
For in his silent woods She's all around!
