I'll no longer place my trust in you
Now that I know how much Life's worth
I'll lament not dark days thrust in you
From now on I'll just celebrate Her Earth
I am sorry if I stole your glorious thunder
When I deked your last killing blow
You know you strived to drive me under
It seems you always liked to lay me low
I learned to dodge your lightning strike
Since I've been struck three times before
Now airborne you are the frightning shrike
I'll not die spiked in tree crimes e'er more
You will no longer splay me open wide
By your sharp talons' strafing incision
No, when you're at wing I've learned to hide
From your sharp long beaked indecision...
I'll fall no longer though you charm me
When perched so high singing your sweet song
I'll stay out of sight so you can't harm me
So my better heart might beat on strong
Author's Notes: This is about a small psuedo raptor called a shrike. Old folks referred to it as the butcher bird because of its habit of impaling its prey on spikes and thorns. Oh, but this is also about the cultural continuum from medieval witch hunts to today. And how Nature does not concern Herself in men's struggles between "good and evil". Its about WWII stukas and idylled stealth bombers. Its about nations and its about Christ and its about Spring. In this poem the shrike is feminine for reasons I won't explain and ya I know that does not seem right -- its the male of that species that sings -- but She has talons just the same... lol.
