In these long sweet days before the Solstice
Though the small yellow lady's slippers' done
Tall hawkweeds and low pussytoes are flowering
And showy lady's slippers have not yet begun
In these early mornings before the Solstice
Lilac and balsam hints perfume still the air
O'er green grass rank after all the showering
Beyond dank forests' dew-clad maidenhair
In hot afternoons before the Solstice
Young fawns must walk before they run
From gnashing hay mowers over-powering
As wild goat's beard turn heads from the Sun
In these warm long evenings before Solstice
Kingbirds and geese call out harsh in warning
Beneath far distant storm clouds towering
As the Sun sets north of cooing doves in mourning
In these short still nights before our Solstice
Come dance with me to distant thunder
Let not close lightning find us e'er cowering
Just let Nature frightening lay us gently under
