High above our lovely resilient Earth
Five times beyond the highest cloud
She dances to nocturne whisps mysterious
In Her sheer night gown vaporous shroud
No Earthbound eyes can see them
No scientist can explain what they are
But noctilucent vapours drift up there
At the darkest knife thin edge of air
If indeed these are crystalline clouds
These are like none they've ever known
For these drift under a black noon day sky
And if at all are by the winds solar blown
If you watched the sky at all this year
Then maybe you have sensed the change
Gone is Her stifling greenhouse atmosphere
She dons a clear black night gown strange
Two and fifty miles sky high far above us
Five times higher than the highest cloud
Drift noctilucent vapour whisps mysterious
She protects all with this nocturne shroud
