It had been a very long time since we were last there down in the ravine where the grey rock cliffs and cold caverns genuflect to the broad river’s bend it was more overgrown than I remember it mind you not as beautiful nor floristically as interesting just a lot more of the same kind of trees now and maybe it’s the time of year but the air here used to be electric with the songs of birds and frogs and insects but the silence now is still a pleasant break from the drone of traffic and irritating car alarms ever in the near distance no one even bothers to look anymore whether someone maybe really meant to use the panic button no but here at least below distant howling wolves we can still hear shreds of the inner peace that we once knew the river itself still flows the same as before and although with a new soft bottom of sand and silt from all the erosion happening upstream it is if not safer for swimmers now I suppose at least more comfortable on their urbane feet and tender senses and do you remember how we used to swim here naked among the sunfish?
Maybe it’s the time of year but it also seems to me the air used to be filled with many more colourful insects it would be more pleasant too now for sunbathers but I have the sense that with all that information at their fingertips no seekers ever come here anymore even on that most beautiful moment of the year when the afternoon Sun breaks through the trees low over the river and is reflected into threads of woven golden light streaming through the grotto and thirteen needle eyes of dark jagged rocks thrust upward only on the autumn equinox as it penetrates our old Earthen cavern illuminating in its deepest recess but for nine seconds with a million refracted shattered shards of Light the faint ochre hand prints left by the first true lovers the world ever knew and there we dance forever yet precisely in the moment when the first red leaf falls and a shimmering silver salmon explodes from the river's rippling surface while the mildly startled raven spreads her black consuming wings just enough to bend Sunlight and through this impossible but inevitable confluence of elemental time and inner space our heads swim again below tree top shadows swirling against the cold brilliant ceiling of our cave we wore leather on our souls and we never even noticed the grit nor biting flies how could we then being One?
We met there again in our dreams last night but of course it could never be the same now but I gladly accepted your invitation to visit you afterwards at your new place such as it is I recognized it as well although it no longer belongs to my ancestors and it too has started to succumb to entropy which made it warmer somehow than I ever remember it despite the peeling paint and although you do not beleive in kindness any more you quickly put my beating heart at ease with your easy smile as I held my hands behind my back and we fell down in laughter upon your mattress I was glad that it was only crackerjacks that I had gift wrapped enticingly for you always denied me the pleasure of giving you anything but you never missed an opportunity to take whatever from me but my pain so like a mischievious child I was watching your face change as you feigned scolding then tore away the wrapping and for about nine seconds it was fun until your phone rang and you had to go to town and would be back in just a few minutes because something had come up and so you left me with a smile and bottle of red in your absense I cleaned up your shop and then washed your dishes and wondered why you would keep that melted silver spoon but you always had your peculiar reasons and I knew enough not to ask when you return if you return for the minutes have turned to hours and this is not how I intended to spend this dream time and your empty house makes me nervous I want to clean that dried stuff from your curtain but then again I do not dare you will punish enough for what I have already done but waiting is one thing I am not good at so I occupy myself by dropping yet another half full goblet of red wine upon your kitchen floor so that I at least have an alibi for washing it again and maybe then I will not get much more than half drunk in your inexplicable absence only you could invite then leave me hanging like this within my own empty dream it is best that you will never find the surprise among the caramel peanuts and popped corn.
