Deer scent musks this evening's breeze
Beyond three still ruffed grouse in my pack
Dank black forest humus scuffs my knees
While cedar brush pyres blaze out back
Green teal stragglers wing through dusk's sky
Against vast gold fast little silhouettes
Above three duck hunters high they fly
Beyond mens' reasons, range and bets
A lone wolf howls dark in the distance
Humiliating home-bound tonguing hounds
Three hunters give up their persistance
Leaving to Night the wild sacred grounds
The day's last geese fly now over-head
Across this new colder moon now waxing
After last eve's festivities of the long dead
Wild winter spirits prey on those now relaxing
Deer buck scent musks this evening's air
As crisp black stillness brings on frost
Its Spring's warm Hope that keeps us there
Its through Winter's death-dance Life gets lost...
