'Best ask yourself 'how would you fare'
If olde natural ways became again the norm?
Our modern power grid's at risk: beware!
In these calm days before the solar storm...
The last time our near Sun truly wildly flared
Was in the mild year of eighteen fifty-nine
We danced 'neath northern lights then shared
When bright nights were rare and so Divine
But now we take electric lines for granted
We just assume they will work there always
Our perception is naiavely warped so slanted
In these the cooler first of your last city days
Imagine how would be powerless urban life
How deep then grows the hunger and dark thirst
Therein men's desperation fast breeds social strife
Such black conditions bring humanity's stark worst
Test task yourself: just how could you fare
When Nature's ways become the new norm?

Author's Notes: In 1859 a powerful solar flare sent magnetographs on Earth off the charts as people watched brilliant northern lights as far south as Florida. Telegraph lines were disrupted of course, but that was a minor inconvenience in these days before our cities were utterly dependent upon electricity, which of course had not yet been harnessed. I think about this as I ponder the present quietude of our Sun...
