Late Spring Bloomers

Beneath black hooves bloom pussytoes
As we ride out, the working day now done
Here blue-eyed grass and prairie smoke
Reach upward toward our quiet Sun
Trot on with me now casually
Down fragrant lilac lanes of honeysuckles
Over fields of white wild flowering strawberry
Upon light reins held loosely at the buckles
Come let us ride unto highlands divine
Up to stone-crop barrens and early saxifrage
Amidst the gaywings and wild columbine
Where rocks and moss reflect Earth’s goddess image
From this high plain we’ll leave the corydalis
To clear blue skies we leave it behind, above
As we descend towards cold grounds callous
There low starflowers bloom where we find Love
Remember this bright Indian paint-brush
When we’re consumed in dark woods below
Then behold the forest violet’s last day blush
As soft forget-me-nots drown within our shadow
Upon dark leatherleaf and bog rosemary
By your lady’s slippers and white meadow-sweet
Lie aloft with me again upon Labrador tea
Amidst fine motherwort come make me complete!
