High overhead fly nighthawks in training
Below grey unsure heavy-laden clouds
Carving thick air hot and humid still
While drone cicadas on wing-trilling loud
This torrid evening heat seems draining
Like yonder marshlands silent, growing dry
Yet caterpillars have their milkweed fill
For Monarchs make late-summer butterflies!
These stone lands dream about the raining
Here all Life yearns naturally unploughed
Now skies deny defying moraine till
Yet Nature creates bounty willed here proud
Storms promised distant may be feigning
As a hard sun setting drives through thunder
Summer warmth must give to winter's chill
When cold snow-shard blankets take asunder
Rise She harvest-moon bright but too soon waning
To illume tall blue-stem grass, fall's flowers
Let warm blue gentle air tonight caress rolling hills
Learn by gloom-light of Her sacred powers!
