Ribbons in your hair

There was dancing in the moonlight
There were ribbons in your hair
Your friends were all around you
And you didn’t have a care
I watched you as you danced there
Saw the smile in your eyes
Loved the stories that you told me
Between the gentle lovers sighs
We walked through all those wonders
Of the places we have been
We’ve loved so many people
In the years that we have seen
But now you start to leave me
And our life is far behind
And the smiles come but briefly
From lost gardens of your mind
No longer dancing in the moonlight
No longer ribbons in your hair
Your friends have died around you
And your face is lined with care
And I watch you as you lie there
And the tears are in my eyes
As your spirit joins the spiral
And drifts through moonlight skies
I remember all those wonders
And the places we have been
I remember all the people
In all the years that we have seen
But now my love you’ve left me
And that life is far behind
And your laughter echoes briefly,
Through the windows of my mind.

Author's Notes: This is something I wrote after catching a snatch of one of my favourite film themes on TV. The song in question is 'Windmills of my mind" from the film The Thomas Crowne Affair.
The rhyme scheme is similar to that in the original lyrics.
