The Shamans Test

Age Group: Adult
I fight for breath, the smell of blood in my nostrils
all is black, not the darkness of night
but that which comes from the absence of light.
Then I remember they wrapped me in the skin
of a freshly slain wolf and buried me
in the dark dank earth, in a parody of death.
This is the last test to see if I am worthy
to be their spirit walker, their Shaman,
But what if I am found to be wanting?
My mind wanders and fever grips my body
I am assaulted by visions of this world
and the worlds beyond this.
Roots of the great ash Yggdrasil curl
round my body and I climb the branches
into the world of spirit and wander there.
How long for I know not, minutes
or a lifetime or many lives who can tell
Then light and air flood my being.
I am back! the test over, my body
exhumed, back into this world a little crazy
a wildness about my eyes, I think I passed.

Author's Notes: Thank goodness things are a little easier now. Having said that those of us who feel the Shamans pull are a little crazy in my opinion
