The British Inquisition

by Moonlight Wolf
 Age Group: Adult

And so it was declared By the blue lords With the meek agreement of the lords in yellow And the encouragement of dead trees That there were witches out there.
These witches were abnormal For they claimed to be unable to work Because they were ill Or recovering from operation Or permanently disabled Or mentally impaired. They claimed money to help them live.
The dead trees and their people Did not like this, crying foul There was so much money Given to these witches For surely so many could not be unable Regardless of how many accidents happened Regardless of how many illnesses endured Regardless of how many soldiers in war Regardless of birth and child bearing Surely these people were lying witches.
Among them were always Witches who lied about themselves Witches who were lost in darkness Witches who were just lazy Witches who needed the tough love Of a harsh system and hand.
And so it was declared By the blue lords With the meek agreement of the lords in yellow And the encouragement of the dead trees That these witches would be dealt with.
A Witchfinder General was appointed One known by the name of Atos From over the English Channel. He would be in charge of rooting out these witches With a suggestion that no more Than an average of one eighth Be found innocent of any wrongdoing.
The witches were summoned Before their Inquisition To see if they were innocent or guilty. "Lift your arms above your head" "Move and empty box" "Stand up and sit down." Their scores were noted by Atos Who calculated them in a shorter time Than it takes for the supposed witch to appear.
The amputee was found a witch And declared fit unless no arms were there. The one with cancer was found a witch And declared fit for they could recover. The sectioned was found a witch And declared fit while in psychiatric care. One needing constant care was found a witch And declared fit for they could still walk The wheelchair user was found a witch And declared fit for they could sit The one with crutches was found a witch And declared fit for they could use a wheel chair The one with only one finger was found a witch And declared fit for they could push buttons. The one too ill to attend was found a witch And declared fit for they clearly feared such a judgement.
All those and many more found witches Were sent to what might have been a gallows Swinging between the Witchfinder declaring them fit And the recruiters and employers declaring them unfit Choking off the money they needed. Some had health choked off, Some were choked off by distress And for some it even choked off their lives.
And so it was declared By the judges, doctors and charities That these people should have the right to appeal And many of them won that appeal Before it was declared again That they should be summoned once more To the British Inquisition And the Witchfinder General Atos.
And this was supported by The blue lords and the dead trees With a meek nod from the lords in yellow That such people were still witches And so only the dying Had the best hope of being found innocent.
Author's Notes: This was something I had to get off my chest- especially after seeing both Panorama's and Channel 4 Dispatches on the subject.
It is about the government generally declaring that a disabled person needs to be constantly tested to make sure that they really are disabled and cannot work, despite the fraud rate for disability benefits being 0.5% according to DWP figures.
Is the idea of disabled people being treated like witches in the Inquisition or in witch hunts in general an exaggeration? It might be but I think that might be the way a lot of people going through the Atos system feel as it causes them a lot of distress and can even make their health suffer- mentally and physically.
While the idea of getting disabled people into work is a noble one, the system being used is horribly misguided. Just like those accused of witchcraft during the Inquisition- everyone targeted is seen as guilty until proven innocent. The system is too rigid and fails to take into account medication and hospital stays. It never looks at whether an employer would hire a disabled person and whether that disabled person would be able to last in the workplace. But as usual, the Government is being thick headed and refuses to admit that it has cocked up.
