The Gold and Silver Masks

by Moonlight Wolf
 Age Group: Adult

I was but a dancing girl, barely eight years old Wild and loud, rebellious, straight talking and bold I was a force of destruction, creative in my soul All around me was the sign to do as I was told
Innocent and mirror smooth, a spirit shade of grey But my mirror spirit cracked upon a fateful day I learned then the difference, between wrong and right And I wailed out my despair all through the darkest night.
A lady came all dressed in white bearing with her masks Upon a stage set on a gym, and she set unto her tasks She called me to the centre and I was dressed in black And she tied to a chair of jet to hold my terror back.
Her mask of gold it looked at me, with all seeing eyes Was this some philosophy or a set of lies? Twas all about performance to save my very soul A twisted sense of reason and far too much control.
Her mask of gold it was the prize, set upon the side Go out and achieve my girl, go and be my pride. Her mask of silver was also there and it watched me too Place some kindness in your heart it will see you through.
And so it was the stage of life, I began to play A forceful rage then by night, a sweet angel by day Become kind and become hard, that is all I ask Said the lady in her white with her gold and silver masks.
Author's Notes: After interpreting a dream I had at seven (because you don't forget creepy bald ladies watching you while wearing masks with glowing eyes) I came to a question about my own sense of morality. My interpretation was certainly ambiguous since it came with both good and bad aspects- good in the sense that it pushed me to be kind and to achieve but bad in the sense that it meant I grew up too fast and forgot to have fun.
In a sense all of this led me to question how much of our lives are in fact a performance. Looking back as a child, I might have identified as Christian but in reality I was probably just performing that role as the girly, hard working, faithful girl because I wanted to be seen as "good." As I said, while it did instill the ability to achieve and also persuaded me to be kind- looking back, just how much of it was a performance.
Something to really think about huh?
