The Lady

by Rhiannon Keneally
 Age Group: Adult

The moon smiles on As I stand, Searching for the Lady Of the Green Land
The darkness is growing And my need is great To find the Lady And seal Midir's fate
Speaking the words Of the spell, I repeat what My ancestors tell
Midir, Dark Lord Of the exiled Llyr, Rose to new heights And instilled new fear
His way was opposed By two friends, Who met in the army Marching to the Ends
One was the elf Teirnon, The last born of the age Of the united warrior And the skilled mage
The other was the Lady, The legendary princess Of emerald Airitech And its only sorceress
No warning was given As the army was destroyed By the offensive attack Of Midir's followers deployed
Before the Gates of Taranis Stood the two friends, The only survivors Of the March to the Ends
The two entered Llyr alone, Fighting on the Dark One's ground, Finally escaping With Midir never to be found
Midir's followers pursued The two friends hurt in the fight, Fleeing the Ends Long into the night
Legions of Ancalagon separated The two friends At the new day's light On the edge of the Ends
Escaping the Legions, They rejoined at Aniron's Drop To try to rest and heal For a brief day's stop
Teirnon slipped to Mag Mor And the Lady, in her grief, Hid in Airitech, Shrouded by tree and leaf As the ages pass, Darkness grows, But Airitech has gone To where no one knows
Scholars have searched For the key But only found Melkor's Prophesy
"Many will hold Airitech But only one will find That evil's shackles Will no longer bind"
Many claimed the magic, But none complete The prophecy of the Dark Lord And his defeat
Now Midir marches again And I fear That the Lady is out there But will not appear
I finish the words That I believe Will summon the Lady This Hollow's Eve
Instead of the Lady, Evil swirled around As I sink to find Shelter on the ground
The gentle moon, Who had smiled on, Phased to black And was gone
The glittering sun, Gone hours before, Rose and set Many times more
The sun soon stopped And the stars fell As silver arrows On the dell
Dark clouds dimmed The arrows' path When enough of them Satisfied the Dark One's wrath
Black demons swooped Down and across To kill and destroy Every animal, tree, and moss
Showers of ash and rock Poured from the haze Of clouds and smoke, Spinning me into a daze
Suddenly the world knew quiet And everything was as it began Above my head, the stars twinkled, Belying the thoughts that ran
Surely the Lady Would have appeared But instead came evil That disappeared
With that thought, It could only be That my fate is unlocked And that the Lady is me
Author's Notes: The Lady is a poem that I wrote that very loosely revolves around Professor Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" story, except with characters and twists from pagan Celtic mythology. The unique people that I conjured up don't actually correspond with the poem and its characters (for example, Llyr is a Celtic god, not a place) .
Not one of my favorite poems, nor is it a particularly good one.
