Black Sails of Annwn

by Rhiannon Keneally
 Age Group: Adult

Down the treacherous path I run, Always seeking the Ever setting sun
As quickly as time turns, My path, always set Beneath my weary feet, Becomes marshy and wet
Branches of unseen trees slap me, As a deep fog clouds all Of my thoughts and cares Beyond any worthy recall
Steadily I continue forward, Somehow knowing I couldn't go back All the while, the mist Cleared to black
All the memories I created On my long journey Faded to nothing When the black became the sea
At last I have come To the Dark Shore, Where all have to cross, But never back to what was before
No thought or move did I need When a ship bearing a light Floated before my Newly sharpened sight
To where does this Black ship glide? What precious cargo Lies hidden inside?
"To Annwn this vessel Can carry one, But ponder this riddle Or else go back to where you've begun
"No great treasure Of man's greed Can burden any who would cross To the Lands of Mead
"Only those with the greatest treasure Can stand before And leave this Darkened Shore
"Now you've heard my message, So in truth tell me What this treasure is And I'll bear you 'cross the sea"
Hearing the unseen guide Recite his message Made me think carefully On the ponderous passage
Treasures of great value Do not shine or gleam With the gilded glow Of unending streams,
So a craft forged By man's hand Will not take one To the Fey land
The treasure this guide Seems to speak of Must then be something Invisible, like love
Whatever it is though, Difficulties lie before, So I better appreciate it When I reach the Darkened Shore
Finally I decided upon Respect, not compassion or love, As the greatest treasure The guide spoke of
Compassion inspires mercy In those with a loving heart, But too often it mixes with pity, Causing all those good intentions to depart
And it most certainly cannot be love, In whose name Fools are made, wars fought, And great men brought to shame
Respect requires no emotion Or to even like another, But only asks to honor and understand The viewpoint of the other
I stood silent After my argument, Waiting for the guide To pass his judgment
"In all honesty, you have given A very pretty answer, But, as to the exact truth, Even I'm not sure
"I believe that you presented A good argument though, As both emotions debatably are not And material loves definitely not so
"I believe that your fee Is fully paid, So climb aboard, " The unseen guide said
With that, my life completed And I passed through the veil To start my new path On the Ship with Black Sails
Author's Notes: Oddest thing I have ever written. I was just sitting on my bed, then all of a sudden a picture came to me of a dark river full of grey ships with black sails floating in the night. All I could think of was Annwn, of Barinthus the Navigator, and even the river Styx crossed my mind. So I wrote this.
When I tried to explain this to some fellow non-Pagan classmates of mine, it went completely over their heads that a poem, or anything for that matter, could be written like that. They just didn't understand.
