by Sharyl Friend Pavlisko
 Age Group: Adult

As I walk upon the dew-soaked grass through my yard, I spot a couple of shadows in the dark woods before me. A shiver of excitement and anticipation course through the hair on my scalp, but it is a feeling that creates peace within my soul. I do not hesitate my steps toward the shadow of the trees, and the full moon above me enlightens my way, as it always does my inner spirit.
As I calmly approach the pine-scented wood, I glimpse a movement and continue to follow it with my widened eyes. I know that there's something within the forest and it wants me to follow. Continuing to go deeper within the pines, I suddenly see several, waist high, yellow orbs glowing within the trees. Without a thought, without fear or reason, I slowly step forward, paying no attention to the fact that I do not wear anything to protect my bare feet from the fallen tree branches, pine needles and scattered rocks that is the floor to this mystical wood.
Finally I see what has had me in a fixation to follow shadows into the forest past my back yard, when normally I would never go within the copse of trees, especially at night. Four black wolves with yellow, glowing eyes staring back at me, calmly standing side by side, await my arrival. Without fear I put out my left arm, palm down, and watch each wolf come up to where I stood.
Each wolf came up to sniff my given hand, sniffed and sat on it's haunches, awaiting the turn of another until all four of the magnificent creatures decided that I was friend not foe. Once I finally let out a long sigh of relief from my excitement at experiencing this miracle, each of the four stood up from their patient sitting positions, and one by one turned back into the deeper forest until I saw them no more. With a sense of being outside of myself, a serene peace enveloped my soul, I turned back from where I'd come into the woods, and returned to my yard and into the house where I slept with the happiest of dreams.
