Autumn Sonnet

Sun waxes in the East
To the crisp forest air
Where mist still lingers,
Concealed by trees whose
Leaves have become fire,
Dancing in the Spicebush scented breeze.
Graceful do they flutter,
Landing on moss like velvet
Next to the great wooden giants.
Good tiding they whisper
To each other when wind rustles
And caresses them until dusk,
To rest in frosty slumber
Beneath pale Moon and glittering Stars.
Author's Notes: Autumn is here!!! :) YEAAY!! It was always my favorite time of the year.
Anyway, this is a non-traditional sonnet form ("traditional" being Elizabethian and Petrarchan structures) , but poetically speaking, it counts. And when people ask why, I remind them of John Keats' own piece called 'On the Sonnet'. He begins with 'If by dull rhymes our English must be chained..." and goes on and on from there to state that poems do not have to be "traditional" to be great works. I have written many non-traditional sonnets, and they are superb pieces. Sestinas don't have to cycle the ending words (one after the other in a series) at the end of each line of each sextet (which would make them 'true sestinas') to be great pieces. Sestinas are pretty hard to write as it is! I had to do one for a Poetry project in my senior year in high school (Ms.Casey teaching - man I miss her) . One guy managed to write a decent 'true' sestina - I don't know how he did it, but a narrative basis helps. No Poet really enjoys the idea of writing six sextets and then one tercet to make a sestina.
But, back to this poem -
Knowing that this is October (my favorite month, and you can guess why) , I felt compelled to write this. Fortunately for me, I practically live in Nature, next to about 900 acres or so of woodlands, lakes, ponds, and meadows, and let me tell you, there is nothing quite like watching everything I mentioned in the poem. I decided not to use specific colors to describe the leaves - it seems too obvious, and I wanted to "spice it up" with a metaphor and antithesis. Fire seemed a fantastic way to describe Autumn foliage. Fire can appear red, gold, or orange (as well as other colors) , and the use of this metaphor integrated within the poem creates a curious atmosphere. The reader asks "why did he say that", when Autumn is not hot at all (at least in New England) . Well, that's the beauty of antithesis, because at the end of the poem, I alluded to frosty nights when the air is chill. It makes the reader focus more and notice things which the Poet wants to be noticed. A lot of my works have antithesis, and it is a great Poetic tool!
