Songs from Julia

by Aine
 Age Group: Adult

1 Songs from Julia consume the room her voice carrying over rows of seating, over heads of friends, and foes her body is soft, plaint, she stands straight, her hands clasped before her, her voice straining Her gown flutters as she shifts her feet from side to side, forward and back her voices raises and lifts above the crowd, above the sky, to the beyond No one makes a sound, no baby cries, no man coughs, no women whisper her voice calms, her body stills, her eyes dilate and she begins to cry
The people erupt in applause, men, women, and children clapping ecstatically The young actress takes a bow and exits the stage, proud The girls head is high, her back straight and a demure smile on her curved lips The girl receives flowers and card, poems, and jewelry as she treks back to her dressing room The girl opens the door takes one step in and softly closes it, a triumphant yes on her lips 2 In a crowed stadium, on a chilly night, in the District of Columbia Her voice rings out over fans as she recite the pledge of allegiance Her hand over her heart, her eyes misting she clutches the microphone and pours her voice in it Her fans cry, the players sob, all from hearing her voice Her song ends, and the people rise up and cheer for the young woman who loves her country so The game starts, she watches the foot ball fly through the sky a triumphant Yes on her lips
She retires home, with a bouquet of flowers in her left arm, and a foot ball in the right She takes off her coat, undressing, becoming more comfortable in her domain She brushes her hair, until it shins like spun gold, she sets her alarm and goes into the dreaming
Dreaming of planes, cars, money, tickets to Paris, and a strong man, with her stronger children She sings and sings to acquire these things, her voice is strong and whole She sings for her fans, her family, for all her material things, her voice gives out, a sudden stop She can not sing, she can not talk, her hair is gone, her body lifeless and frail She cries on the side walk, a cup in hand, as people give her a penny here and there She is homeless, lost, forsaken by her fans, her voice is gone, and now she has nothing She tries to cry out to sing once again, but her reasons are not pure and so no sound is made
She wakes up with a start, clutching at her throat, screaming, there is sound, she can sing She can still wish for the car, the plane the family, she can still sing She dresses in preparation for the day, singing out again and again, yes she has a voice
3 She is singing again, her voice carrying above the heads in the crowd, to the sky She sings for America for the children, mothers and fathers She sings of poverty, starvation and equal rights, of gay rights, and single mothers She sings not of cars, planes, and her own selfish ambitions She is singing for the voiceless, less fortunate , needy, destitute people Her song ends and there is not a sound made, no woman, no child no man dare make a sound She stands there, her heart in her throat, hoping, wishing to help change the world A single clap, and than another and then another, until the room bursts with applause But this is a silent applause, an applause of understanding, of changing, of wanting to help. She exits the stage, the clapping still proceeding, they have understood, a single tear escaping
Across the nation, across the world, people speak of Julia's song The young girl who changed the world, who set in motion a better tomorrow yes, everyone, knows of what Julia did and the impact of her song And that is why Julia can triumphantly say, Yes
