My Teddy Bear

by Earthlover
 Age Group: Adult

You came to us so full of life and spirit, With such boundless energy we couldn't come near it,
We brought you home as our little friend, You brought us joy without end,
You'd walk with us to the park with ease, Sometimes you'd run off just to tease,
But you'd always come back and give us a kiss, The times like that I sorely miss,
Cause' all too soon we all could see, A limit to your energy,
You were growing old like we all will too, It's a part of life and nothing new,
But it doesn't seem fair that your life's not as long, Our little friend Tear full of love true and strong,
Because you're a dog you soon left us to go, To the Rainbow Bridge where the cool waters flow,
I miss you so much I still break down and cry, The mere thought of you gone brings a tear to my eye,
I'd hold you and call you my real Teddy Bear, You'd kiss my ear to show me you cared,
But time took it's toll and with it the fun, That you used to have when you'd get out and run,
Your frail little body could no longer see, You could not hear a sound and couldn't tell it was me,
I spent months of anguish wondering what I should do, Knowing one thing for certain that I'd always love you,
With a heart filled with sadness I knew that I would, Do one last thing for you, it would be understood,
I did out of love what was hardest to do, I let you go and though I knew,
If it were me it is what I would wish for, To be released and suffer no more,
When it's my time to die I'll be ecstatic to see, You there at the Rainbow Bridge waiting for me.
Author's Notes: This poem is dedicated to our little dog Tear who was put down August 13th 2007. She would have been 18 on October 10th 2007. We still miss her dearly. I broke down and cried several times writing this. It was a terribly hard thing for me to do but after several months of anguish and seeing her suffer, I had to ask myself a question. What if it was me? What would I want? I could not deny that I would want to be released from my suffering and so I did my final act of love for Tear. I discussed it with our local vet and had her put to sleep. It only took 2 or 3 seconds for her to "pass" and I broke down and cried like a baby. My wife told me to pull myself together and wait until we got home but I didn't care what people thought. Anyone that says animals can't love and be loved are full of crap. We are blessed to have 3 other dogs and 3 cats. They helped me get through a very difficult time. I know we all must die but it seems inherently unfair that our little animal friends have such a short life in comparison. I do take comfort in the belief that I will see them again after I die. Blessed be, Earthlover
