Keeping Company with the Wind
Age Group: Adult
Keeping Company with the Wind
Tap tap…tap tap, my heart joins in patter;
The rain that gently beats the pane
Mere feet away from me she sits;
Beautiful sage and foreteller
Silver peppered tousles perfectly frame her face
Her eyes, dually engaging;
Liken only to the passion of a fervid star
We are one here in this moment
She reaches, and I can’t help but to reach back
Her face softens to a smile, I can only watch;
Whilst she drifts along a sea of memories
“Tell me” I whisper “Tell Me”
Ah but alas, if it were only that simple
I had known the crone now for some time
I suppose it’s been since I was but a wee child
Spiritous maiden and mother,
Who danced by the sun; sang by the moon
Years passed, now aged and weathered
She debates the new teachings in her own mind
Remembering the old, giving thanks to her patrons
“There is a fine line between the two” she mutters
Happiness or sadness; shadow and light;
Shared or solitary; strength and weakness
After all nothing balanced has ever grown one-sided
With little family to speak of, she finds herself alone
Her son grown, begins his time of moving on
Her husband two stories so go,
One that he passed some many years ago
Another says he’d set sail and to date has yet to return
Untouched by human hand for near 13 years;
Trading her candle for the harbor’s beacon
Keeping company with the wind;
She responds in kind to the seabirds calling
She thinks perhaps she’d seen him once or twice;
There aboard a passing ship
Though more likely t’was only her mind playing tricks
Reminding her again as the weeks slowly ticked by
Til aching she turned her cheek and gently closed her eyes
And still she remains day after day, waiting all the same
