I Remove The Mask...

Age Group: Adult
And so...I take the Mask away,
But... what if that's all there is?
No jewel-bright eyes that shine,
No red painted lips that smile,
No gentle touch of colour to kiss
My pale, cool, so-called skin.
I let my Mask become Reality
And behind the facade is nothing.
Emptiness. Nothingness.
All substance has long gone.
Oh, how I wore that face,
Far too well, for far too long.
Did it work? Did I fool you completely?
Did you really think there was anything more?
But nothing lies beneath.
My artificial face was all.
No hidden Truth or Beauty...
Only the Mask. That was all.

Author's Notes: ....Not at all what I expected when I started this one! Sometimes I wonder where it comes from.
Two things started the seed to grow, here. A poem, (where did it go? I can't remember the writter's name...) and an image in a music video that I love... "The Enemy Within" by Rush.
...and no, I haven't been wearing a mask all my life. I got rid of that a long time ago, found my Self under it. ;-) So again, I'm rather suprised at what I wrote. Perhaps a few thoughts from the past when I used to wear an artificial face. Perhaps more influenced by the video than I realized. Perhaps... it was just there, waiting to be written. Who can say for sure?
