Creek Poem

Age Group: Adult
The middle of the village was
divided by a stretch of ragged growing burrs
and sticklers and snakes and such,
a dividend creek winding down into
a gully filled with filth,
ivy-wrapped tires and rusted
car parts and old license plates partly
claimed by the muddlin waters.
The creek ran grimy down till it hit
the mouth of a bigger sister stream,
which turned murk to silver, to gold
and sent it running to meet the sun
some yards past.
A girl with wild bunches of
honey-soaked curls and a cross-eyed
glare in the broad daylight followed it down
and watched crawfish in tide pools
swirling like piping blue jays in the sky.
She dipped her dirty bare feet in
and cried in delight.
Crawdaddies waved their pincers.
Later in the day when her momma
came calling her back for dinner,
she caught burrs in her floral-print dress
and put flowers in her bonnet.
