Big Momma Monarch Maple

1.
Big momma monarch maple lets
our tin roof house lean against her.
We've shared twenty years of lichen.
It's raining;
the crickets lament into evening...
The harvest is on its way into fervor
(meat pies, pumpkins, fat tom turkeys) .
Too humid to pick tomatoes now, but just
the right mood for tobacco and
a little autumn shower.
2.
I work in a land of
skyscraper intensity: big blocks touching clouds
and glaring down below, chastising life.
Why, they ask.
Why would you bother living out there.
I say I'd-------------------------
but I'd rather Thoreau it,
and sit in the rain.
3.
A praying mantis big-as-my-palm rests
on my knee.
