You Shall Know Me

When the tiger lilies spread along the earth
beneath mountains of pregnant rainclouds
I shall have passed thither; and you shall know me
by the thunder in my cloak and the starlight at my heels,
by the fog that the knob valley cups in its palm
and the heavy musk of rain that bathes the ground.
When the dance of light above the hallowed
grove of pines grows close enough to raise
the hackles of the dead, I shall have passed thither;
and you shall know me by the acrid smell of
burnt flesh and curling tree bark, by the smoke of the ash
rising to touch the heavens.
When the first babe of spring fills its tiny lungs with air
and howls its name to the winds I shall
have passed thither; and you shall know me
by the cries of the mother and the sharp pain of birth
that rips wide through her womb, by the
new life that comes from the ashes shall
you know me. I have come.
Author's Notes: I feel this is more ritual poem than run-of-the-mill poem.
