god/goddess

Age Group: Adult
he was dark and she was fair
with autumn flowers in her hair;
her beauty was beyond compare
to any being anywhere.
he was darkness, she was light,
polarities of black and white
separate but intertwined
like yin and yang, apart/combined.
he was cloaked in robes of night,
she was garbed in gown of white--
embodiment of ev'ry hue
existing in between the two.
they stood reflected hand-in-hand
in waters blue by golden sand;
upon their handiwork they smiled,
for nature is their dearest child.
"the universe is one, " she said,
"and love is the connecting thread
that binds us to the light, the source;
it runs through all and is the force."
"i am part of all you see,
and everything is part of me;
what is, what was, what comes to be
are kindred to divinity."
"we are children of the earth:
the mother-goddess gave us birth.
we are part of nature's web."
this is what the goddess said.
dark-cloaked stood her counterpart,
with eyes as black as midnight's heart
that pierced my soul and laid it bare
and read the secrets sleeping there.
he told me, "fears deep down inside
are demons of our own design;
face them, fight them big and small;
there's nothing left to fear at all."
he said, "to learn the lesson well
you must escape your private hell
of ego, free the mind and heart;
inside yourself is where to start."
god/goddess is the source of light,
a candle burning in the night;
the flame reflecting endlessly
in mirrors that are you and me.
those mirrors, prisms bend the light
in endless patterns, colors bright
that give the cosmos symmetry
and infinite diversity.
divinity is all around:
in man and stars and oak and ground;
so linger where the stars are bright
unchallenged by the city's light.

and when it came their time to part,
i kept their wisdom in my heart
and thanked them as they bade farewell--
and hoped i'd learned the lesson well.
