Gray light, new day leaks through the window
by Arianna Pendragon
Age Group: Adult
Wet hair, dirty lenses, swallowing words over words that can't be said.
It would be so perfect to exhale such a sweet sentiment onto his cheek.
Instead I close my eyes and wish I was dreaming.
We raise our faces to the sky and laugh, inebriated only by the soft caresses of the wind as we walk over flowers. So much to be said in a second, so many words and feelings and ways to cram into one verb.
How can those letters hold in them the emotions you felt? It does not show admiration for the valiant way you got beaten up for her pride, it doesn't express the longing in their eyes when they're away, it doesn't convey the heartbreak of separation and joy of the rendezvous and the highs and lows of throwing yourself so deeply into feeling this way for someone else all the time.
Exhausting, and "worth it"?
And yet I can't imagine anyone ever feeling love any better.
I am reserved.
There's a memory in a field I forgot to take.
Left it with the wild things and yellowed grass, with the brutal summer sun overhead to bleach the meaning from the words and the color from the paper.
Light blue turns white, pink goes gray.
Rain warps the skin and cuts the ink. The chemicals move fluidly down the paper until each drop comes into line with all the others; a line smearing the once-acute feelings of love, betrayal, sadness and hope into one enormously bittersweet emotion.
There is pain, and there is conquest.
I find no satisfaction in paranoia.
You have me by the shoulders, the waist, the heart, etc.
And in those moments, when everything is bright and perfect and the sun casts pure white into the corners that house my darkness;
When the windowpanes reflect the images of a colorful religion onto the linoleum;
While nature spreads her wings and floats gently to the Earth;
When I feel as though I am engulfed by the simplicity and beauty of my life long-forgotten,
I love you.
