Oh, pretty girl...

olive skin and such fierce, razorblade eyelashes
covering your oak-tree eyes.
don't let them fillet your heart
and serve it in seaweed and embers;
it's so much better as a mantle piece above the fire,
like a ticking pendulum in a clock that has no face.
if you listen closely you can hear the footsteps
of the misguided,
how hollow their weighted sound is
as it hits the pavement of our veins.
oh, pretty girl.
if i could keep your lungs afloat
with the frostbite on my breath
then i could truly understand what it's like to struggle
like they tell me to in the movies.
press this delicate needle to your arm
and play yourself like a pretty phonograph
that skips every night under the lights
that make you sweat an unbreakable fever
and listen to their voices
as they tell you you're talking in riddles,
you're talking in symbols.
your hands are shaking
because every boy you see is tearing off shreds
of your blue incandescent wings
and i'm taking light from fireflies that glow so bright
you would swear the stars were made of honey
and i'm putting you back together.
oh, pretty girl.
