Averted eyes

your stillness scares me
it is summer in too much heat, humidity on your skin
and the way the pollen travels, soft, sticky
grass stains and sunlight until we can remove our flesh
like coats and say, this is who we once were
but not anymore.
I know you are not dead,
at least, this much I presume, that the field you lie in
is not a coffin, that your body is relaxed with sleep
that summer has settled into you, wrapped you
and even without my hand beside yours, you are safe.
still, the motionless scares me
because it is so uncertain and undefined and maybe
something is wrong, you are feverish, consumed,
wracked, your eyes milky white and black
beneath those heavy lids, as summer eats your skin
gets it's claws like fish hooks into your body
and doesn't let go.
Author's Notes: "Averted Eyes" was written about and is dedicated to my friend Kevin. Something happened to him this summer...he froze; his soul stilled. he's not the same. and it scares me. I can't even get him to make eye contact with me.
i miss him. and i wish he'd just talk to me.
