The Battle at Autumn Point

by Akasha
 Age Group: Adult

One nation under siege. Hello—what’s on your mind today? Wipe the gunpowder from your skin, the acid rain from your eyes, shout over the explosions in your ears. Once I wrote a poem about myself, and all that turned out was a blank piece of paper. Was it because of my nothingness, or was it just White-Out— covering up all my flaws?
I am an army. I’ll suit up my weakness to fight in your watchtowers; fight FOR your watchtowers. It’s funny how one can lead to their own demise. I never again want to see that empty look inside your eyes.
Today I went walking with my mother I saw a girl that I used to know. I waved at her reflection, hidden underneath the autumn leaves. But she could only stare at me, remorse within her face. For I have fought battles against myself, to win the war for what I believe. I have won battles for you, and I’ve lost more than you perceive.
Author's Notes: I wasn't sure whether to include this under "Pagan Spirituality" or "Personal Life". This poem is about my insecurities, about how I sometimes forget about myself when I'm defending myself against people who don't accept me for being Wiccan.
The reason I included the "you" part is because I was referring to the whole teenage Pagan community--every time I stand up for myself, I'm standing up for other Pagans as well. Sometimes that level of "standing" is too much, and I end up fighting a losing battle.
The title is "The Battle of Autumn Point" because it is now nearing the day when I, several years ago, dedicated myself to this path. The "point" in autumn is the day I began a life-long struggle between myself and people who don't accept me for what I believe in.
