A Place For Vision (Variation on Dryden)

Fey as the fiery beams of moon and stars
In dark to chanting, trancing travellers
Is vision to the soul: and as on high
Those rolling fires discover but the sky,
Not green life here, so vision's glimmering ray
Is meant, not to supplant our mundane way,
But yet to urge us through the dark to day.
And as those nightly tapers humbly fade
When day's bright Lady rises from her glade;
So pale grows vision at the Lady's sight;
So dies, and so dissolves into a natural light.
Author's Notes: As a Naturalistic Pagan, I believe in evidence. There is no evidence that deities and magic are "real" in the most literal sense, but they may yet be moving and powerful. These poems are a tribute to the inspiration of Pagan ways.

Dim, as the borrowed beams of moon and stars
To lonely, weary, wandering travellers
Is Reason to the soul: and as on high
Those rolling fires discover but the sky,
Not light us here, so Reason's glimmering ray
Was lent, not to assure our doubtful way,
But guide us upward to a better day.
And as those nightly tapers disappear
When day's bright lord ascends our hemisphere;
So pale grows Reason at Religion's sight;
So dies, and so dissolves in supernatural light.
