Ah, Fading Joy (Variation on Dryden)

by B. T. Newberg
 Age Group: Adult

Ah, fading joy, how quickly art thou past! Yet we thy passage haste: As if the cares of human life were few, We seek out new, And hasten fate that does too fast renew.
See how on every bough the birds express In their sweet notes their presentness. They all accept and nothing spare; But on our mother nature lay their care: Why then should we, descended from the bough, Such troubles choose to know, As none of all our cousins undergo?
Hark! Hark! The waters fall, fall, fall, And with a murmuring sound, Dash, dash, upon the ground, To mother's slumbers call.
Author's Notes: As a Naturalistic Pagan, I believe in evidence. There is no evidence that deities and magic are "real" in the most literal sense, but they may yet be moving and powerful. These poems are a tribute to the inspiration of Pagan ways.
For more information on naturalism, see HumanisticPaganism.com.
Original Poem:
Another rework of a Dryden, this one was more challenging. While others involved changing 17th-cen. Christian motifs to modern Pagan ones, this one contained few overt Christian references. I had to think deeply about the values and assumptions underlying Dryden's original.
Ah, Fading Joy by John Dryden (1631-1700)
AH fading joy, how quickly art thou past! Yet we thy ruin haste: As if the cares of human life were few, We seek out new, And follow fate that does too fast pursue.
See how on every bough the birds express In their sweet notes their happiness. They all enjoy and nothing spare; But on their mother nature lay their care: Why then should man, the lord of all below, Such troubles choose to know, As none of all his subjects undergo?
Hark! Hark! The waters fall, fall, fall, And with a murmuring sound Dash, dash, upon the ground, To gentle slumbers call.
