A Sonnet to Sky and Earth

by B. T. Newberg
 Age Group: Adult

May we ever pay to mother earth And father sky the debt as guests we owe? A pinch of cornmeal flies upon the turf, Returning but a portion they bestow: A little gift--how little may redress!-- Before we too are flung upon the grounds, And yet they take in us their happiness, For we provide a hostel for their rounds: Our feet receive as guests the waters deep, Our limbs above attend to sky-born fires, And by this very patronage we keep Our hosts, and host them in our mortal byres. In us the sky and earth may take their rest, And even so we honor gift for guest.
Author's Notes: This sonnet incoporates imagery and practice from the Druidry of Ar nDraiocht Fein.
The first honors of all ADF rites are always for the earth. Cornmeal is a common offering. This gesture is soon followed by a grounding and centering meditation, which typically invites into the body energies from the waters below and the sky above.
The metaphor of hospitality, with the mutual obligations of host and guest summarized in the Proto-Indo-European word ghos-ti, is an important ADF tool for understanding our relation to the world and its kindred spirits.

As a Naturalistic Pagan, I believe in evidence. There is no evidence that deities and magic are "real" in the most literal sense, but they may yet be moving and powerful. These poems are a tribute to the inspiration of Pagan ways.
